Trolling Fishing Playa del Carmen – FAQ
What is trolling?
When trolling, several lines with bait or lures are pulled behind the moving boat. This covers a lot of water and targets fast species that hunt near the surface.
Which fish do you catch trolling?
Mahi-mahi, wahoo, tuna, kingfish, Spanish mackerel, bonito, sailfish and marlin, depending on the season.
How many rods are used?
Several rods are set at different depths at the same time, using outriggers and downriggers.
Do all anglers fish at the same time?
When trolling, anglers take turns: when a fish strikes, the next angler in the rotation takes the rod.
When is the best season for trolling?
Wahoo, tuna and barracuda bite all year. Mahi-mahi, sailfish and marlin peak in May and June, bonito from October to December.
Is trolling good for beginners?
Yes. The crew sets up all lines and guides you as soon as a fish is on.
How far offshore do we troll?
Usually several miles off the coast, depending on fish activity and sea conditions.
Which bait and lures do you use?
Natural bait and artificial lures. Live bait is caught during the trip.
How long should a trolling trip be?
Trolling works on 4-, 6- and 8-hour trips. For sailfish and marlin we recommend 6 or 8 hours.
Can we keep the fish?
Yes, depending on species and regulations. The crew cleans your fish for free after the trip.
